Friday the 13th...

Contrary to some, Friday the 13th is a bad day, and these some people actually locked themselves up in the safety of their home on this very day. Paraskevidekatriaphobics — people afflicted with a morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th — is the term. More often than not, people with this phobia believes that just by leaving their house, they have raise their accident-prone level by up to 52 percent. I would therefore like to take this oppurtunity to say it is purely coincidental that I was at home the whole day today. Hey, I went up to my grandparent's place though for dinner so as to let them have a good look at me before I enlist. Oh by the way, I hate to admit this but I am dreading counting the days everyday. # Insert laughters and sorry faces here #

Where some might not know that breaking a mirror will cause you to have 7 years of bad luck, walking under a ladder or having a black cat crossed your path will bring you misfortune, Friday the 13th has got to be the most widespread superstitious of them all. As much as I belive that I feel luckier when a black cat crossed my path and so does walking under a ladder and going out on a Friday the 13th. My advice is that if there is another omen that befall you on the 6th day of the week (counting sunday as the first), let's say it's a sign to head home huh? Some of my friends may know this, there was once one of my friend had a black cat crossed his path on the 13th day of the month which happens to be a friday as well, well he thought not much about it until a phone call which if I remember correctly tells of his grandma going to hospital but not serious thankfully, next his supposdely "pro" skills in Counter-Strike failed him that day last but not least, he failed a couple of modules as results were released that day...

Sorry for the digression, now let's see how does this widespread supertitious might have come about...

It is said: If 13 people sit down to dinner together, all will die within the year. Many cities do not have a 13th Street or a 13th Avenue. Many buildings don't have a 13th floor. If you have 13 letters in your name, you will have the devil's luck (e.g. Jack the Ripper) There are 13 witches in a coven.

Although it is hard to explain the originality of Friday the 13th, we all but have to take a look at each seperately. Suggestions were that since primitive men had only 10 fingers and 2 fees as units, they could only count till 12, what lays beyond that therefore is a mystery. Another example was that the Bible tells us there were exactly 13 present at the Last Supper. One of the dinner guests — er, disciples — betrayed Jesus Christ, setting the stage for the Crucifixion. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Crucifixion took place on a Friday?

It is said: Never change your bed on Friday; it will bring bad dreams. Don't start a trip on Friday or you will have misfortune. If you cut your nails on Friday, you cut them for sorrow. Ships that set sail on a Friday will have bad luck – as in the tale of H.M.S. Friday ... One hundred years ago, the British government sought to quell once and for all the widespread superstition among seamen that setting sail on Fridays was unlucky. A special ship was commissioned, named "H.M.S. Friday." They laid her keel on a Friday, launched her on a Friday, selected her crew on a Friday and hired a man named Jim Friday to be her captain. To top it off, H.M.S. Friday embarked on her maiden voyage on a Friday, and was never seen or heard from again...

The bad friday reputation goes a long way since it was supposedly on a friday that Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit.

Based on the above knowledge, could it be that an unlucky Friday + unlucky 13 = An Unluckier Friday?

So repeat after me, "GO HOME & keep your fingers crossed if you spy another ill omen accompanied with a day known as Friday the 13th."

jh out.~

Not boring not exciting, not lazy not hardworking, not handsome not ugly, not short not thin, not a bad guy not quite mommy's boy either. Regular Singaporean guy who like most guys probably get several different colours of the same shirt, t-shirt, berms, jeans once they fall in love with a particular design. Been through the era of cassette tapes of walkmans to discmans(remember the anti-shock technology) as well as MiniDisc(coming out at a bad time) which obviously lost to the emergence of mp3s and the CD to LD which saw LD losing out to VCDs. Next came the DVDs which 0wned the vcds and try to act smart by having 2 groups, HD DVD and Blu Ray. 2 words BLU.RAY. Loves to reminisce the old days when A&W rootbear float was still around and KFC was still a restaurant complete with waiters serving you Kentucky Fried Chicken. The days where bus fares were 10 cents for students and pizza hut's lunch buffets. Moves/dances to the jumpy music of Ipod Ads and likes to laugh at the Hello I'm a Mac, Hello I'm a PC advertisements!
