Usher...

nope not talking about the Perfect 10 sing and look like usher contest... talking about my work instead...

Would you like an office that has a window view like this?

Ok.... sorry it's only the 4th floor... and it's a conference room.... but hey, I know I would like an office like this...! Might even fight against myopia!

What on earth am i doing there u ask?

Working.... as an usherer... supposed to be an usherer and supposed to be briefing and some minor training... guess what?
We ended up packing the "goodie" files, for a moment though, we thought we were packing NDP goodie bags....
"goodies" basically equals pamphlets and some advertisements from IBM and it's Partners... Oooh yeah, I am ushering for the
IBM Forum 2004

Packing the files was alright, I mean we are being paid $7.50 an hour 11 hours a day..... but.... I wasn't really prepared to be the supervisor of a group of 9..... -_-"
Basically Shaun who introduced me this lobang, were sitting side by side... and our boss basically separate both of us and put us in charge of each team of 8-9 people... I was like -_-" yes.... -_-" because it was my first day whereas Shaun and the rest of the people there were there on Monday for the briefing and were more clear about how things go... Well anyway, Shaun and I were put in charge of making sure all the different papers/items(10 of them all in seperate boxes and scattered)  into file folders, what kind of methods, well that is up to us, Supervisors to think... Liewz....

Anyway we managed to find 8 out of 10 items from that messy room, our boss told us to file all the 8 first and dun care about the last 2... by the way, the items are to be in a certain order.... so I devised a production line plan and soon both teams were working hard on it... Everything seemed well until the missing 2 items were found... By then, out of the approximately 1,500 folders 500 were filled...  Heeding a team member advice I took a guy and 2 of us were busy repacking the near 500 boxes with the missing 2 items... At about 11am, since our boss wasn't around, Shaun and I thought it was appropriate to give the people a break and so we stopped production and to take 10..

It eventually became take 20... hey... you can't blame me, the toilet is so far away... some people are hungry, some need smoke breaks, it didn't help to see coffee & tea displayed outside another conference room and it wasn't for us... For our room, it's just plain ICE water... & sweets... besides, Boss put us as supervisor, meaning we take charge and my people like it! :-)

Soon after we got back from break, 2 of the items ran out of supply, thus breaking our production again... I did not managed to put my knowledge of Production Planning & Control during my diploma years in use because I had no idea where to get the supplies except the messy room. A double check with another of our hirer's people, we were told to continue without that item... Just as we were working on it for about 20 minutes, our boss wants us to make use of the photocopier in the room and photocopy the 2 items.... While photocopying and reinserting the 2 items back into boxes that did not have it.. Another item ran out, this time no photocopying can be done as the photocopier soon break down and that item was a thin booklet...

Boss came over the room and sent 3 person to buy lunch for the rest and sent another 3 to kallang area to get about 3,000 photocopies of different items.. I wanted to go but could not make it as Shaun was already going and they need a "supervisor" to be around.... So here we are, due to a break down of the photocopier, the production line was broken again but we decided to break into 2 teams 1 team doing the front part until the missing 2(supposed to be photocopied item), the other after the photocopied items.

Had a quick lunch, then a short briefing where I was assigned the role of registration usher... Went thru a dry run... I was chosen to face an "angry" customer which turned out 50/50 ok? Well, it's kinda like training lah...

Had a tour of the ballrooms to be used.  Headed back to the conference room to continue filing. But a shock await us, of the nearly 900 files already packed... We had to repack them all over again... because of a n additional item... my finger were so dry by then and I had 4 of my fingers bleeding when we were 3/4 of repacking.

Took a 30 minutes break when the waiter brought food left untouched from the other conference room which had left, all of us helped ourselves to the coffee and tea too... Wow, swissotel has got many different kinds of Tea, from Earl Grey to English Breakfast Tea. After break, I was told a bad news, they were missing out an agenda on all the files!!!! I did not know how to break the news to the team... But when I did, all the faces were really What-the?-Isn't-My-Job-Scope-supposed-to-be-an-usherer?

We decided to stop work and just sit down in the room and do basically nothing... We off all the lights and brought down to curtains to block the daylight, basically everyone went on STRIKE as all of us cannot believe that we are going to repack all over again. We complained to each other to feel better, one of the best I heard was, "they want our fingerprints to be all over the file is it?". The best part is, I seemed to be the one leading the strike.

Thankfully, one of boss people came running back told us to "pretend" to do some work, we could not be bothered until she told us she had helped us gotten the agenda be removed from placing into the files. We were suddenly motivated and as fast as you know, we soon completed the other 600+ files.

At about 5.15pm, we completed our temporary jobscopes, as "executive filers". We then began slacking around... haha. Some of us were given minor roles to do, like going to buy 3 pin multi plugs... haha... being paid to shop for multi-plug... We took a lot of breaks, pretended to do some work as our "saviour" has instructed should anyone else dropped by.

Who says, when you are busy time passed slowly... apparently, time passed faster when we are slacking as when we are busy it was so tormenting to look at the time...

Gtg report for real Ushering work tmr 7am...

Not boring not exciting, not lazy not hardworking, not handsome not ugly, not short not thin, not a bad guy not quite mommy's boy either. Regular Singaporean guy who like most guys probably get several different colours of the same shirt, t-shirt, berms, jeans once they fall in love with a particular design. Been through the era of cassette tapes of walkmans to discmans(remember the anti-shock technology) as well as MiniDisc(coming out at a bad time) which obviously lost to the emergence of mp3s and the CD to LD which saw LD losing out to VCDs. Next came the DVDs which 0wned the vcds and try to act smart by having 2 groups, HD DVD and Blu Ray. 2 words BLU.RAY. Loves to reminisce the old days when A&W rootbear float was still around and KFC was still a restaurant complete with waiters serving you Kentucky Fried Chicken. The days where bus fares were 10 cents for students and pizza hut's lunch buffets. Moves/dances to the jumpy music of Ipod Ads and likes to laugh at the Hello I'm a Mac, Hello I'm a PC advertisements!
